An unsuccessful attempt was made to burn alive a young married housewife in the city, the police said here today. Police inspector U B Jadhav of the Shil Daighar police station told PTI here today that the housewife and the accused were relatives who had a dispute around a week ago.

It was on the night of December 1, 2014 at about 11.30 pm and 12.00 pm that the accused, who is the brother-in-law of the housewife is alleged to have poured kerosene her and set her on fire. The police said that a badly burnt Poonam Harijan (20) was rushed to the Thane Civil Hospital last night and is being treated at the hospital.

The police identified the accused as Suraj Harijan (20), who is the brother-in-law, adding that he fled the spot after the incident. The police said that a hunt is on for Suraj Harijan and an offence under Section 307 and Section 342 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against him.
