When Hadisunnisa Khan (20) came to civic-run Bhabha hospital on Tuesday, complaining of pain in her stomach, the 34-week pregnant woman was told to go home. Barely hours after that she went into labour and delivered a stillborn child in an auto-rickshaw as she was coming back to the hospital.

"This was my first child. I have been coming to Bhabha hospital for regular check-ups ever since I conceived. On Tuesday, the doctor examined me externally and told me to go back home. I was told that some pain is normal," Khan said.

The woman, who hails from a village in Uttar Pradesh, had come to Mumbai just ten months after her marriage. Her husband Javed and relatives created a hue and cry following the incident, alleging negligence.

The hospital has now ordered an inquiry into the matter. "We will know more details only after the result of the probe is out," said Pradeep Jadhav, medicial superintendent of the hospital.
