Hosp-bound pregnant woman delivers baby on Virar local

A 20-year-old pregnant woman and her relative were on a train going to a hospital in Virar when she delivered a baby boy with help from women commuters.

Asha Das, a resident of Nalasopara, had already started getting labour pains when they boarded the train. They were in a hurry to reach Sanjivani Hospital and did not hear the announcement that the train would stop at platform number 8 in Virar. They were supposed to board a train which halts at platform number 1 as the hospital is two minutes walk from there.  On the train, she came to know that the train will halt at platform 8. 

“Asha was writhing in pain. As soon as she learnt that she will have to walk a km to reach the hospital, she asked us to deliver the baby on train,” said Halima Shaikh, a relative of Das. She delivered the baby with help from commuters.

When the train reached Virar, GRP constable Roopali Ghadge rushed her to the PHC in Virar. “She was bleeding profusely,” said Shaikh. Later, Das was shifted to Siddharth Hospital in Goregaon.
