Home alone collegian kills himself

A 17-year-old student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his home on Wednesday.

The police said  Mangesh More, a hotel management student of a private institute in Dadar who lived in Shudhanshu Cooperative Society on MG Road at Kandivli (W) with his parents and elder brother,  returned home from college around 2.30pm on Wednesday. About half-an-hour later, his mother, Meena, left to buy some groceries and other household commodities. When she returned at 7pm after visiting a relative in the vicinity, she found the house locked from the inside.

“Meena knocked the door several times, but did not get a response. She then called her husband and elder son who broke open the door and found More hanging from a nylon rope tied to the ceiling fan,” said H Pimple, senior inspector of the Kandivali police station.

The family and neighbours rushed More to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

The police have recovered no suicide note. “We searched the house and More’s bag, but did not get any suicide note. We also tried to check his mobile phone, but it was locked. We are planning to get it unlocked to check his messages and call records,” said Pimple.

“As of now, we do not suspect any foul play in his death. His parents said in their statement More was good at academics and they never forced their children for anything. We will also question More’s friends on the possible reason why he took such a drastic step,” said another police officer. The police have registered a case of accidental death.
