In a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Justice Harjeet Singh Bedi was sworn as the 36th Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court by Governor SM Krishna. Before being appointed to this post, the 60-year-old was a senior judge at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

He began his career as a lawyer in 1972, and was appointed as additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana HC in 1991. He was made a permanent judge in 1992.

While Justice Bedi comes from a family of agriculturists in Montgomery (now in Pakistan), his father, Tikka Jagjit Singh Bedi, was also a judge at the Punjab and Haryana HC.

Tuesday’s ceremony was attended by the judge’s family as well as several dignitaries, including former Chief Justice of India, YV Chandrachud, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chhagan Bhujbal, Director General of Police, PS Pasricha, Police Commissioner AN Roy among others.

The HC has been without a CJ since Justice Kshitij Vyas retired on July 18. Justice VG Palshikar was appointed as the acting CJ in the interim.
