19-year-old Vikas Ajit Tank drew inspiration from World Wrestling Entertainment

Finally, the law has caught up with the mysterious ‘hammer man’, who kept the city on tenterhooks for months. The police on Friday arrested 19-year-old Vikas Ajit Tank in Goregaon. He was a terror to residents in Andheri and Goregaon.

According to the police, it was Tank who attacked two women in Andheri and Goregaon with a hammer. However, on Friday, the hammer man’s luck ran out.

“At 4.30 pm., the accused tried to snatch the purse of a teacher, who was on her way home. Though caught off-guard by the sudden attack, she started screaming. The accused tried to hit her with the hammer, but she managed to fend it off. Alert officials rushed to her rescue. After a chase, they managed to catch the accused.

Then he was handed over to the police officers patrolling the area,” assistant police inspector Deepak Patangre said.

The accused allegedly told the police it was his desperation to get money that drove him to such attacks. In his statement to the police, he allegedly said he was inspired by the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) programme. In one such programme, he said, a participant had attacked another with a hammer.

On further interrogation, he allegedly admitted that he was behind three such attacks, besides the Friday’s incident.

“The accused is a resident of Oshiwara. He and his parents are sweepers and clean the premises of a housing society in Oshiwara,” a police officer said.

Tank, who is in custody, will be produced before the Metropolitan Magistrate on Saturday. The police will medically examine Tank to find out if he has some mental complications. His parents will also be questioned, the police said.

Nishtha Patel, a 23-year-old physician, was brutally attacked while she was climbing the stairs of a building at Manish Nagar in Andheri on September 7. The accused hit her on her head with a hammer while trying to steal her bag. Tank fled the scene after being resisted by Patel.

On October 31, a 15-year-old school girl was attacked on the stairs of her building in Amrut Nagar, Goregaon. She sustained multiple head injuries after the accused hit her on her head several times with a hammer. He then fled with her belongings and Rs700. In September, a woman was attacked by the accused in Versova.

In all the incidents, the victims were so shocked by the onslaught that they could not even see the attacker’s face which made the policemen’s job difficult.
