In a major setback for the city’s infrastructure, the state government admitted in the legislature on Tuesday that the Haji Ali-Nariman Point sealink and the Metro Rail Phase II (Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd) projects are impractical. The sealink project was put on the backburner after concessionaire Reliance Infra Ltd refused to go ahead with the project. The Metro Rail line II is stuck awaiting environmental clearances. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said, presently it looks impracticable to undertake the Haji Ali-Nariman Point sealink and Metro II projects.“The environment ministry has rejected the carshed proposal at Charkop for Metro II. The state government is finding out an alternative location. The Haji Ali-Nariman Point sealink is also facing problem. Earlier, the contractor has refused to undertake the project, saying it is not feasible,” he said. The CM promised to pursue his pet coastal road project, which is yet to get environmental clearance from the Centre. “Though the Centre has not given an environmental nod to the coastal road project, I will pursue it with the Centre. Besides the coastal road project, I will take up all projects which need environmental clearances, with the Centre,” the CM said.“It is major setback to Mumbai. Earlier, the CM had clarified that they are not sure about the Navi Mumbai international airport project. Now, there is uncertainty over the Metro II and sealink projects,” said Yogesh Sagar, BJP MLA.@ss_suryawanshi
