Do you think nature conservation is the work solely of a few professionals and NGOs? If that is the mindset you have, then now is the time to change it and also get a chance to gain recognition at the national level for the work you have done in your locality.
Nature Forever Society’s ‘Sparrow Awards 2012’ is one of such opportunity for citizens who are not associated with an NGO or environmental action group but have worked in their local area with the aim of conserving nature.
“We have often noticed that while the best known conservationists consistently receive accolades for their good work, there are many others who make consistent efforts in their own right to save the environment. Our sentiment behind launching the Sparrow Awards is to honour such people and applaud their silent efforts,” said Mohammed Dilawar, president of the Nashik-based society. He added that people from urban areas across India are welcome to file their nominations for the award.
Dilawar said that the main aim behind these awards, is to involve the common man from diverse sections of society in the conservation movement and celebrate the work of individuals and organisations at the grassroots level for strengthening the conservation movement, protecting the environment and encouraging biodiversity.
With the same aim, the society has also launched a unique photography competition for amateur photographers, centred on the concept of biodiversity. “There is no need for expensive cameras or tours to exotic places. People can click photos with their mobile phones and of natural scenes around their homes. The competition is a platform to express your love for nature,” said Dilawar.
Last year’s winners received a certificate and a replica of a bird’s nest in the form of prize due to lack of funds. “We are looking for sponsors this year. Let’s hope that companies will come ahead to make this competition a success,” said Dilawar.
