Strict action should be initiated against those hotels and restaurants who throw garbage in the open, said divisional revenue commissioner Eknath Dawale, who was addressing a Green Kumbhmela meeting in Nashik recently.

The meeting was attended by municipal commissioner Dr Praveen Gedam, DCP Avinash Bargal, senior officials and members of NGOs. Dawale sought information from various departments regarding efforts being put in to maintain and conserve the environment during the ensuing Nashik Kumbhmela.

Green Kumbh is an initiative by the divisional commissioner and the district collector in coordination with some NGOs to take care of river Godavari and the environment in Nashik and Trimbakeshwar.

Dawale said it's imperative that the environment is protected during the mega event. He pointed out that immediate steps were necessary to control waste and garbage mixing with waters of Godavari river. For this, it was important to create awareness and for that people, government agencies, industries, educational institutes and NGOs should work together, he said.

Dawale also said plastic bags of less than 50-microns (thickness) should be banned, and strict action should be taken against those using such plastic bags, he said.
