Though the water stock hasn't increased, it will show improvements in the next few days
The first heavy spell of rain came with good news. Catchment areas of lakes situated in Nashik and Thane districts received significant rainfall. Though the water stock hasn't increased, it will show improvements in the next few days.
After the scanty rainfall of the last year, the total water stock in the seven lakes went below 5%. Even the monsoon arrived two weeks later than the usual dates and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was forced to use reserve stock of the dams. Even though there was some spell of rain in and around the city, it didn't help in increasing water stock. But now the situation has been improved.
On Thursday and Friday, the catchment areas of lakes received good rainfall. Upper Vaitarna and Bhatsa lakes have zero live water stock. Both lakes received significant rainfall. Upper Vaitarna received 110 mm rainfall while Bhatsa received 125 mm till Thursday morning and then even on Thursday, some spell of heavy rain come in the area. Even the other lakes like Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna received a good amount of rainfall. Tulasi lake which is situated in Sanjay Gandhi National Park received 90 mm rainfall. Even other lakes received half of the amount than last year, it will come when the city needs it most.
The total water stock in lakes was 4.95% on Thursday, it dipped down to 4.91 per cent on Friday.
