On Tuesday around 10.30 am, Vishnu Dhengale (55), who was already drunk by the time, picked up a fight with his wife and children. The family lives in Khadegolav of Kalyan (E). "He is an unemployed alcoholic who demands money from his family daily," said a police officer from the Kolsewadi police station.

When they refused to oblige him, he started abusing them. When even that did not work, he brought a knife from the bedroom and attacked his younger daughter Shanti (name changed), who managed to run out of the house.

"The neighbours intervened and called the cops," the officer said. The girl was sent for medical treatment and she later registered a case against her father. The cops have registered a case against Dhengale under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntary hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian penal code. Dhengale was produced in the court on Wednesday.
