Ganeshotsav 2012: Help clean Juhu beach on Sept 30

As the city prepares to say goodbye to their favourite god, DNA invites its readers to help clean Juhu beach on Sunday morning as a part of its initiative.

With the 10-day long festival of Ganesha Chaturthi coming to an end on Saturday, DNA has organised a clean-up drive for citizens at  Juhu beach on September 30. Concerned over the toll that such festivals have on the environment, DNA has taken up this drive as a part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Public figures such as Congress MP Gurudus Kamat, MLA Krishna Hegde, Ashok Jadhav, Baldev Khosa as well as school principals Father Edmund Mascarenhas of Holy Cross High School and Sister Beena CJ of St Joseph’s School are expected to take part. Around 300 volunteers have already signed up.

The drive will be held between 6am and 9am on Sunday. Those interested are expected to arrive at the main entrance of the beach  near the Juhu Beach police station by 6am.

Volunteers will be provided with hand sanitisers, gloves, brooms, phenyl and other material required for the clean-up.
DNA has taken on this task as when the festival ends every year, beaches are littered with decayed flowers, coconut shells, festoons, plastic cups and broken Plaster of Paris idols. When left to rot, the debris eventually gets buried under the sand or mixes with seawater, polluting the environment.
