Ever after three general rounds and a special round of First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions, close to 9,000 students are yet to acquire a single seat. Interestingly, availability of seats is not a concern as 80,000 plus seats are lying vacant in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) colleges.

FYJC admissions for the academic year 2019-20 are underway, and a total of 3.19 lakh seats were available across 849 colleges in the MMR.

"There are no takers for some college seats. Students are being very choosy when it comes to college preferences, its location and the popularity it carries. Some are confused, as in the first round they apply for the Commerce stream and they reject it once they get allotted, and in the following round, they apply for some other stream," said a college principal. He continued, "This is not the first time. Since the centralised admission process (CAP) started, this has been a trend among students. It's good that students are putting in efforts in deciding their future academics, but it's unhealthy at the same time as it can lead to them not get getting any seats or deserving college."

With the third round declared on August 2, close to 50,636 students were allotted seats in MMR colleges. However, a total of 22,778 still didn't manage to get any seat in colleges. Apart from this, a separate set of 16,344 students were without any seat who even after being allotted seats through the first three general rounds, didn't confirm their seat.

Dr Usha Mukundan, principal of Jhunjhunwala College, Ghatkopar said, "Students have been advised constantly to not wait or let go the seats they have been allotted at any case. Waiting in the hope of getting better rounds is a dangerous as it might leave the student without any seat eventually. It is advised to confirm seats where one has been allotted through CAP."

This year, a total of 2.11 lakh students registered for FYJC admissions which is less than last year that had 2.31 lakh students. Even after having less students this year, the state education department, who manages the CAP for FYJC, added 98 new colleges, making it to 849 total colleges in MMR in order to increase the intake capacity and widen the choices for the students.

After last year's debacle where many students were left without any seats even after six to seven rounds of admissions, the department authority promised to make things better and convenient for the students.

"Students are supposed to get their choice of college. In the 10 colleges that they list in the form, they will be placed in one of them. Even after so, students fail to secure or confirm admissions," a senior official at Mantralaya said. He further added, "If every student follows the admission process and fill the forms correctly after understanding the vacant seats in their preferred colleges, can easily get admission. If not, how would have more than 1.5 lakh students secured seats in MMR?"

1,31,310 seats across MMR are claimed by students through the first two rounds.

The admission process for the special round will end today (Monday) which allotted 48,664 students out of the 56,375 students that applied. Once, the process ends, the fresh round for the remaining students i.e, close to 9,000 excluding those who didn't confirm their seat will begin. The fifth round will be on the basis of first come, first serve (FCFS) process.
