Less than 24 hours after the Congress gave its go-ahead for an alliance with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the Dombivli-Kalyan local body elections, the latter has deemed the deal inconclusive, contending certain issues remained unresolved.
The NCP has charged the Congress with highhandedness for announcing the alliance without completing the required formalities. “There is no alliance at this moment. The Congress has given us the proposal and we will discuss it,” NCP state president Madhukar Pichhad said.
He added, “I think a formal decision on the alliance will be discussed at the party’s parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday. The NCP does not believe in alliance in piecemeal. The pact cannot be limited to 107 seats in Dombivli and Kalyan municipal corporation polls. Local body elections are being held simultaneously in Kolhapur, and there are 22 by-elections in the rest of the state. The two parties will have to work out strategies for all these elections.” The local body elections will take place in October.
The Congress has entrusted revenue minister Narayan Rane with the Dombivli-Kalyan municipal corporation elections. The NCP has appointed senior leader Vasant Davkhare for the dialogue. But after the preliminary discussions, the Congress gave its consent to the alliance without adequately referring the matter to senior NCP leaders. Insiders said the Congress decided to contest on 54 seats, leaving 51 for the NCP. The latter’s state leadership has raised objections as it wants the Congress’ consent for other places before it gives the nod for Dombivli-Kalyan.
A senior Congress leader said, “A section within the NCP appears to have second thoughts as they want to extract a bigger bargain from the Congress in the rest of the state.”
Unlike the NCP, the Congress has made the Dombivli-Kalyan corporation elections a prestige issue as it has been under the Shiv Sena-BJP control for the last 20 years. The region, which is dominated by Marathi-speaking population, has been a Shiv Sena-BJP stronghold for sometime.
Meanwhile, the Sena and the BJP have settled on a seat-sharing agreement.
