Four rob jewellery worth Rs18L from gold unit staffer

The police have launched a manhunt for four men who allegedly robbed an employee of a gold manufacturing unit of diamond-studded ornaments worth Rs18 lakh in MIDC area of Andheri (East) around 1.30pm on Thursday.

The four men, who were on two motorcycles when one of them brandished a knife and snatched the bag which 46-year-old Gopal Rai, a deliveryman with an authorised gold certification company was carrying. The company certifies purity of gold on which the value of ornaments is pegged. Rai was on his way to deliver the ornaments to various jewellery establishments from where they had been brought for certification, said the police.

“On Nelco road, the two bikes slowed down close to Rai and one of the pillion riders pulled out a knife and asked Rai to part with

the bag,” said an official of MIDC police station.
“He threatened to attack if Rai raised an alarm.”

“Soon after the bikers made away with the bag, Rai called up his employers. A complaint has been lodged against four unidentified assailants,” said senior police inspector Suresh Huzband. A police officer said that some of Rai’s colleagues were being interrogated to find out if someone, who was in the know of the route that Rai was taking, had alerted the assailants.
