Four killed in road mishaps across Mumbai, five drivers held

Four people including a 65-year-old woman lost their lives in four separate accidents in different parts of Mumbai on Saturday.

Five people involved in all the four accidents were arrested and were later granted bail by the court. The accidents took place at Jogeshwari, Powai, Goregaon and Bandra, police said.

According to the police, around 10 am, Pankaj Gawas and his friend Shardul Patole were riding on a two-wheeler at Aarey Colony in Goregaon East when a speeding BEST bus hit their vehicle. The duo was rushed to a nearby hospital where Patole was declared him dead, while Gawas was admitted for treatment. Aarey Colony police arrested the BEST driver.

Around 11.45 am, taxi driver Krishnamani Dubey, 52, a resident of Kherwadi, was cleaning his taxi at Teacher's Colony when a speeding car hit him. He was rushed to Sion Hospital where doctors declared him dead. Car driver Arvindkumar Dubey was arrested by Kherwadi police after he was discharged from hospital.

Around 1.15 pm, Somnath Rathod, who stayed with his family at Kajupada Chawl at Sakinaka, had gone to attend a relative's funeral along with his friend Ramdas Kolamkar. When they were returning from the gathering, a speeding tempo hit them at Powai Lake near Ganesh Ghat. Rathod and Kolamkar were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital where Rathod was pronounced dead by doctors, while Kolamkar was admitted to ICU. The Powai police arrested tempo driver Mohammad Furkaan Mohammad Imran Khan.

At Jogeshwari, one Raziya Begum Abdul Jabbar, 65, was travelling in a rickshaw and when the vehicle reached JVLR signal, rickshaw driver Wasim Chaudhary, in an attempt to jump the signal, moved ahead and collided with another car.

Raziya succumbed to injuries sustained in the mishap, while rickshaw driver Wasim and car driver Mohammad Mukir Shaikh were arrested on the charge of causing death due to negligence.

In all the four incidents, the accused persons were produced before courts at Borivali and Bandra and were granted bail on Rs 15,000 each.
