Four people drowned in separate incidents during Ganeshotav. On Anant Chaturdashi, Datta Pathak, 21, drowned in Gade river in Koproli village in Panvel taluka. The body of the deceased was not found till the time of going to press.
According to Vilas Fadke, sarpanch of Chirle Gram Panchayat that looks after Koproli village, Pathak went missing around 8.30pm.
“The immersion process went on for around one hour after which we returned to our homes around 10pm. We realised that Pathak was missing. “We came back to the river to look for him and even found his slippers there, but even after three hours we could not trace him.”
The search was resumed on Thursday morning when the fire brigade was called in. “The fire brigade team searched for five hours but they could find him,” said Fadke. Earlier, on the fifth day of the festival, Prashant Dattatray Ingole, a resident of Belpada, died due to drowning. The incident took place on the night of September 13, at a pond behind Bharati Vidyapeeth College in Belpada, when Ingole, accompanied by his mother, went to immerse their society’s Ganpati idol.
The first drowning case was reported in Shivkar vilage in Panvel taluka on September 10. Bodies of Kiran Manore, 36, and his nephew Nikhil Manore, 25, were fished out the lake in Panvel taluka after 20 hours.
Burglary on final day
Unidentified thieves robbed gold jewellery worth Rs6.26 lakh from a house in Kopra village in Kharghar on Wednesday evening when the family was out for Ganpati immersion.
Madheshwar Maikar, a resident of sector 10, registered a complaint with Kharghar police.
The family had left their home around 5.30 pm to immerse the 10-day village Ganpati.
