Nearly 20 flights arriving at and departing Mumbai airport were cancelled on Sunday, impacting thousands of passengers. Four Alliance Air flights, and around 16 Jet Airways flights were cancelled, according to flightradar24, an air traffic monitoring website.

Jet Airways said in a statement, "A few flights of Jet Airways were cancelled today due to operational reasons. The airline regrets the inconvenience it caused to its guests. Affected guests have been re-accommodated while those seeking refunds have been compensated as per appropriate guidelines."

A sudden burst of hail storm hit north India over the weekend, while snow has also persisted in several parts of the region, owing to which several flights were delayed or diverted. This resulted in a cascading effect on several flights the following days as well. "Flights of several airlines were impacted, partly also due to the staff roster being changed or many crew members being on leave, This caused delays and diversions amid extreme weather conditions in north India," said an official from Mumbai airport.

Even several IndiGo flights were impacted because of this. "Due to a severe hailstorm in North India on Friday, February 7, 2019, 11 IndiGo flights were diverted. Consequently, this disrupted operations across our network the following day. As part of recovering our schedule, positioning of crew and aircraft had to be readjusted. As a result, a number of flights were cancelled," IndiGo said in a statement.

However, several irate passengers took to social media to air their grievances, expressing thier displeasure at the last-minute cancellations of their flights. Aditya Nandulla took to Twitter to say: "Flight 9W681 BOM-LKO cancelled at last moment. My parents were waiting for boarding pass at Mumbai airport, and Jet team announced this."

Preksha Palod was another such passenger. "Have been stranded at Mumbai airport since 5 in the morning. No support from @jetairways staff. Just fooling the public," she said.
