Former Qatar consulate employee dupes man of Rs2.5 lakh

The Kurla police recently arrested a former employee of Qatar consulate for allegedly duping a man by taking Rs2.5 lakh from him under the pretext of getting him a high paying job in Qatar.

The accused has been identified as Mohamed Anwar Yusuf Nawab (52), from Hyderabad. He was arrested on March 26, from his hometown and was brought to Mumbai.

According to the police, Nawab was employed with the Qatar consulate as the public relations officer but was asked to leave in 2010, due to unknown reasons. The police said that a few months ago, Nawab came in contact with Mohamed Imran Ansari, a kurla-based resident. Nawab told Ansari that he was employed with the consulate and that he could help him get a high paying job in Qatar. Convinced, Ansari agreed to pay Nawab Rs2.5 lakh, following which Nawab gave him a Qatar consulate letterhead in which the payment acknowledgment was written.

Later, Ansari waited for a call for a job but he did not receive any. He then tried calling Nawab but his calls went unanswered. To look for Nawab, Ansari went to Qatar consulate and was informed that Nawab had not been working with them since 2010. Realising that he had been duped, Ansari approached the Kurla police and lodged a complaint.

"Since, Nawab is a resident of Hyderabad, a team was sent there and he was arrested following which he was brought to the city," said a police officer from Kurla police station.

Nawab was produced in the court and has been remanded in police custody till April 1.
