Abdul Aziz escaped death narrowly on Thursday as he had left the building for offering namaz and returned later than usual from the mosque. Even his two family members, who were visiting from Uttar Pradesh for Eid, survived with minor injuries.
Aziz works at a catering shop on the ground floor of Hussaini building. He visits the mosque every morning around 6 am and returns between 7:30 and 8 am. On Thursday, he was delayed as he was chatting with his friends and reached the building after 8:30 am.
On reaching, he learnt that the building had collapsed. Aziz's mother and brother said they had gone to the sixth floor of the building to meet someone when the building came crumbling down. "My brother told me that they escaped with minor injuries. I stay alone in Mumbai and my family had come to meet me for Eid," said Aziz.
Mujahiddin Rehman, 28, who works in the building's ground floor godown was lucky too. Rehman reports to work at 7 am but on Thursday, he was late. On reaching, Rehman found it collapsed and began searching for his brothers who also work with him. "My brothers were rescued by locals and were rushed to a nearby hospital," he said.
