MUMBAI
The state government on Thursday announced that it would conduct the first and second round of post-graduate medical admissions again.
State government went into action mode after Supreme Court upheld the verdict of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court that the Socially and Economically Backward Castes (SEBC) quota for Marathas will not be applicable for post-graduation (PG) medical and dental courses in 2019-20. The state government on Thursday announced that it would conduct the first and second round of post-graduate medical admissions again. It would then approach the Union government with a bid to increase the quota for this year to facilitate more admissions for students who fail to get admission even after the third round.
Patil said that the government will abide by the SC's decision to go for the admission process. He said that the medical education department has already reviewed the situation and after conducting the first and second round of admissions again, the third round which is yet to take place, will be conducted. He said that this will help ascertain government as to how many students who could have benefited from the SEBC reservation are deprived. The state government would then approach the Union government with a bid to increase the quota for the state at least for this year.
PWD minister Chandrakant Patil who headed the sub-committee on Maratha reservation issue informed media persons that none of the courts has rejected reservation benefits to Maratha community and SEBC quota of 16 per cent in jobs and education. He said that notification for NEET 2019 examinations does not mean that the admission process has begun. The state government had brought out its notification for medical admissions in February 2019 and that is why the state government is of the opinion that post-graduation process had started after SEBC quota was given due sanction by it. Despite the government's promises, it is clear that the government's grand plan to give SEBC reservation to deserving Maratha students has definitely hit a roadblock.
After conducting first and second round of PG medical admissions again, state government will approach the Union government with a bid to increase the quota for this year to facilitate more admissions for students who fail to get admission
