To overcome the void caused by the sudden death of its tallest mass leader in Maharashtra, and to mobilise the masses before the state assembly polls, former Union minister Gopinath Munde's daughter, Pankaja Munde Palve will launch a two-week long yatra reminiscent of her father's initiative in the early 1990s.

Munde had launched a 'Sangharsh Yatra' during the reign of the erstwhile Sharad Pawar-led Congress in the state. The subsequent polls had seen the Shiv Sena and BJP come to power, with Munde as the deputy chief minister. Pankaja, who is her father's political heir, will launch a similar yatra on August 1 from Sindkhedraja in Buldhana, which is the birthplace of Rajmata Jijabai, the mother of warrior-king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The yatra will span two phases with a break in between, and end at Choundi in Ahmednagar, the birthplace of Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.

It will cover 89 constituencies in 21 districts and see 65 rallies and over 200 welcome meetings being held. "This is a good initiative by Pankaja Munde to take Munde saheb's legacy forward," said leader of the opposition in the state legislative council, Vinod Tawade.
