In the wee hours of Monday, a fire broke out on the ground floor of Rajhans Co-operative Housing Society in Thane.  Though there were no casualties, the fire damaged the two cars — a grey Mercedes and a white Honda city — in the parking lot of the building.

A short circuit is believed to have started the fire.

Around 2am, residents of the society, which also houses the famous Rajmal Lakhichand store, were woken up by their security guard.  “There was fire in the electricity meter box room on the ground floor which is adjacent to the parking lot,” said Gautam Borkar.

The guard quickly informed the secretary of the society, who in turn raised an alarm and all residents from the seven-storey building quickly moved out. Two fire engines were sent to the spot and the fire was doused in 10-15 minutes.

As electricity and water supply were disconnected, residents went to their family and friends in the neighborhood.  “We have got new meters. We are hoping everything will be normalized soon,” says Borkar.
