The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) has finally found a bidder interested in redeveloping a slum located at Vakola. For the first time, the SRA had floated tenders to appoint a builder to redevelop a slum. After a third attempt and an extension of 15 days, the authority succeeded in getting a bidder.

While the first tender was floated in February this year, bids were re-invited from developers in July, and finally, the second call for re-inviting bids was floated in September. “Till October 4, the authority received only one bid, so an extension of 15 days was announced. However, it didn’t bear any fruit. The name of the bidder will be disclosed on Monday or Tuesday when the tender will be opened,” said a senior SRA official.

The slum project is named Om Namo Sujalam Sufalam Co-op Hsg. Society Ltd. measuring 21882.15  sq metres, and it belongs to the Society of Slum dwellers. Over 800 slum dwellers are in the project. The slum is close to the Western Express Highway.

Ashok Redkar, the treasurer of the society, said: “We are waiting for the authority to inform us details of the developer, and hold a meeting with us. We are hopeful that redevelopment shall take place, provided our conditions are met.”

According to slum dwellers, a developer had earlier promised them Rs 17 lakh for every room apart from the house that they were to get under redevelopment. But they are expecting more and better facilities. Redkar informed that the project is as old as 1985 and in the mid 1990’s two buildings were built by the society itself. Later, they had found a developer as well but the project was truncated as it got embroiled in a legal tussle.

An SRA official said, “We are following Supreme Court order, which asked us to float the tender and invite developers to rehabilitate the slum dwellers. The bid we received will be opened next week and the name shall be known then.”

CASH BENEFITS

  • This project is unique as slum dwellers have to be given cash benefits apart from the houses. This point was mentioned in the tender floated by SRA.
