A case related to female genital mutilation (FGM) in Australia has become a talking point in the city. This comes after an Australian appeal court overturned the conviction of three people accused of FGM. The appeals court ruling in Australia has created a ripple like it did when it has convicted three people. The appeal verdict comes even as the Supreme Court is hearing a matter on FGM.

Two years ago, three people were convicted of practicing FGM on two girls. As per the news website ABC News, the conviction was set aside as the evidence showed that victims remain intact. Earlier, three people including a priest, mother and a nurse were convicted for performing FGM, which is banned in the country. Link to the case is as follows http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-08-11/genital-mutilation-convictions-overturned/10108106.

FGM is largely followed among millions from the Dawoodi Bohra community. The verdict had different reactions from people who are party to the FGM case in SC. Dawoodi Bohra Women's Association For Religious Freedom (DBWRF), a trust that represents over 69,000 of practicing Dawoodi Bohra women welcomed the verdict by the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeals. DBWRF's impleadment application is being heard in the SC.

Samina Kanchwala, secretary, and spokesperson DBWRF said, "We are delighted that our fellow members of the Dawoodi Bohra community have been acquitted by the Court. Khafz is completely harmless and a religious ritual followed for centuries and this historic judgment will be welcomed by Dawoodi Bohras around the world who are struggling to inform public opinion that is intent on denying women their right to practice their religious observance. For us, practicing "taharat" is extremely important and it is our choice. We, as highly educated and empowered women would never do anything that would harm our daughters. In a democracy, everyone deserves their right to practice their religion with freedom."

Masooma Ranalvi, who has filed intervention petition in SC said, "We will have to wait and watch on how Indian courts react to our plea. What we have been saying is that other countries have laws which prohibit FGM. We have also been saying that the practice that they do is under FGM. The procedure that they describe is type 1 A and type 4 of FGM. The definition of the procedure is the same no matter what name you call it. It has been called a crime. These facts are there."
