Residents of Asmi Complex, from where the two suspected thieves jumped off on Tuesday, are shocked as they hadn’t expected the two to choose the fatal escape.
On Tuesday around 3.30am, Razak Khan, 23, and Raghu Bhagat, 20, sneaked into Asmi Complex at Ram Mandir in Goregaon (West) to steal from houses. A resident saw them and alerted the others. A group of people cornered them on the seventh floor. Fearing their wrath, the two jumped off and died.
The residents said the duo might have assumed they were on a lower floor and could escape after jumping. “Since they were tiptoeing their way up, they may have assumed they were on a lower floor. We are probing if they were drunk. We are waiting for the post-mortem reports,” said Arun Jadhav, senior police inspector of Goregaon police.
When the duo was on the ground floor of block R2, Pradeep Poddar, 23, a resident of opposite block R3 spotted them from his fifth floor apartment and alerted the others. “The duo heard whispers and panicked. Before we could utter a word, they jumped off,” said Poddar.
The police said some residents told the thieves they would be taken to the police or beaten up. “It is clear that they were not pushed or assaulted. The two may have got scared seeing a big group,” said a police officer.
