Following agitations in western Maharashtra by farmers’ organisation Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana, which demanded a higher price for sugarcane, the situation continues to be tense in Pune, Sangli and Satara districts as several sugarcane farms have been set on fire in these districts.

Sanghatana leader Sharad Joshi has threatened to launch a massive agitation if the state does not hold talks with the agitators by November 21.

Amid this situation, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) resumed its regular operations in the affected districts on Friday. Its services in these districts were suspended after ST buses were targeted by the agitators.

Meanwhile, Raju Shetty, independent MP and farmers’ leader who was arrested last week for leading the agitation, was granted bail by the sessions court of Baramati on Friday. But he has been barred from entering the talukas of Daund, Indapur and Baramati.
