Exam pressure drives 18-yr-old Sanpada girl to commit suicide

An 18-year-old girl committed suicide by hanging herself in her residence in Sanpada’s sector 10 on Tuesday afternoon. The police suspect that the girl, a higher secondary student, took the drastic step due to examination pressure. She did not leave any note behind.

According to the police, the deceased, identified as Mamta Ganesh Sonawane, a resident of Saraswati Society, was found hanging in her kitchen by her mother in the afternoon. Sonawane lived with her parents and brother.

She was alone at home when she killed herself. “Her parents and brother left home in the morning and her mother discovered her around 2.45pm, when she returned. She used her dupatta to hang herself from the ceiling,” said inspector Sone Kamble of Turbhe police station.

Sonawane was a student at a junior college in Vashi. “We are not in a position to establish the exact reason why she committed suicide as she did not leave any suicide note. She was probably under depression because of her studies,” said Kamble. 

However, the police have registered a case of accidental death and investigation is underway. “We are looking at every aspect. We will be checking the call records of her mobile. There are chances she committed suicide due to some other reason,” the officer said.
