Environment minister praises 'DNA' for eco-Ganesha move

“DNA’s initiative of installing eco-friendly Ganpati idols is wonderful as it made people aware about the environment. I am happy that DNA’s Eco-Ganesha campaign, which is running in its third year, has created a huge impact among Mumbaikars,” said Sachin Ahir, minister of state for environment and housing.
On Monday evening, Ahir visited Neptune Magnet Mall in Bhandup to take darshan of an eco-friendly replica of the Mahaganpati, one of the Ashtavinayaks. There he performed an aarti with 300 children of construction workers.
He later also visited R Mall in Mulund to pray to an eco-friendly replica of Shri Varad Vinayak.
The minister said that DNA’s campaign has helped the environment department to encourage the use of clay Ganpati idols instead of plaster of Paris ones.
“The Ashtavinayaks are swayambhu [self-manifested], thus giving a good message to people to use clay idols. DNA’s Ashtavinayak Yatra has also given an opportunity to those who cannot afford to go to the original temples to pray in the city itself,” the minister said.
DNA, in collaboration with the Mumbai mobile crèche, which ensures that children of construction labourers get education by enrolling them in schools, also organised a day of entertainment, along with a drawing competition, at the Bhandup mall.
While giving away the prizes for the first, second and third places to Aniket Kasare, Prem Ingole and Ajay Wanje respectively, the minister lauded DNA for including underprivileged children in the festivities.
