The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) removed encroachments in the Central Bus Stand (CBS) area in the wee hours of Thursday.

About two weeks ago, the KMC had launched an anti-encroachment drive in the city, but it was stopped last Monday as the deputy chairman of the state assembly council, Vasant Davkhare, asked the KMC to discuss the issue with the state home minister, Satej Patil, labour minister Hasan Mushrif and other public representatives.

Davkhare’s directions came after the BJP MLC, Chandrakant Patil, objected to the drive. However, the civic body resumed its drive on the grounds that it had not received any written orders from the government.

The KMC officials on Wednesday removed hawkers from Pach Bungalow Road who had re-occupied the roads on Monday evening. The KMC officials arrived at the CBS area and removed the stalls from a lane behind the Gem Stone Complex using excavators.

The encroachments near various commercial buildings were also removed. The stall owners were livid with the civic body’s sudden move. “The KMC removed the stalls which were regularised in 2000. The civic body has continued the drive despite Davkhare’s orders,” said hawkers’ leader, Raghunath Kambale.
Shiv Sena MLAs Rajesh Kshirsagar, Chandradeep Narke and Sujit Minchekar protested outside the assembly in Nagpur as the KMC went ahead with the drive despite Davkhare’s orders.
