Soon, residents of Andheri East will have an open green space as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned to build a garden in Chakala on a plot of 13,321 sq metre. The Civic Improvement Committee (CIC) cleared a proposal on Wednesday to take possession of the land to develop the garden.

At present, the land has been encroached upon by a temple and a marble shop. The CIC has directed the Estate department of the BMC to get possession of the land, and then start working on developing the garden. Anant Nar, chairman of the committee said, “We visited the plot and it was found that around 10 per cent of land is encroached upon. We have directed to first remove all the encroachment immediately,” said Nar.

The 13,321 sq metre plot is located near the Bisleri Company on the Andheri-Ghatkopar Link Road. The plot is reserved in Developed Plan 1991 for a garden. However, due to encroachment, the garden could not be developed.

But, to avoid the cancellation of the reservation of the said plot, the civic body has included the plot in the Development Plan 2014-34. The BMC has sent a notice to the marble shop to vacate the plot.
