Eight persons were injured reportedly following cylinder blast at a building in Govandi on Thursday.
The incident occurred at around 8:50 am at room 119 on first floor of building number 69 at Lallubhai compound. Fire, subsequent to the blast, was doused within 15-20 minutes after reported gas leakage led to blaze.
The injured, five from a family, were identified as Bharti Basa (70), her daughter-in-law Vijaya (45), grandsons Sunil Kumar (28) and Rama Basa (19) and granddaughter Shweta (19) who received 10-15% burnt injuries. Youngest member of the family, Shyam, however, escaped unscathed, while his father, Shankar, was out of town.
Apart from the Basas, their neighbours Asgar Aalam (32), Sayyed Jaani (75) and Wahida Begum received minor injuries.
“Prima facie, it appears the incident occurred after leaked gas from LP cylinder caused fire. However, the blaze was doused within 15-20 minutes and the injured rushed to Rajawadi hospital,” Amit Dave, assistant municipal commissioner (M-east ward), said.
While a visibly shattered Shyam could barely speak following impact of the blast, according to the locals, though the blaze was doused within few minutes, it billowed upto fifth floor of the building, named Vishalgad, meant for project affected people (PAPs) of Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
“My relative staying on the floor where Basas reside informed me about gas leakage. When I checked the same, I could see blaze erupting. The Basas tried to extinguish fire with water, but failed. Sensing danger, I asked my family members too to move out of the building. Otherwise, repurcussions of the incident would have been dire,” Firoze Pawaskar, who stays in a room just above that of Basas, standing amidst burnt remains in his residence.
On asked, fire officials said they were yet to ascertain the damages caused in the incident.
Until going to press, the victims were informed to be out of danger.
The fire brigade used three engines, two ambulances and one water tanker during the operation.
