Accused Sushant Suresh Gangavane allegedly siphoned off the money over six years.
The police have booked an administrative staffer of the Indian Navy on the charge of embezzling Rs 2.2 crore meant for the welfare of children of naval personnel. Accused Sushant Suresh Gangavane allegedly siphoned off the money over six years.
Gangavane, who works as a clerk at the Education and Welfare department of the Western Naval Command in Colaba, came under suspicion of unethical conduct after an audit pointed to falsification of bills between 2011 and 2017.
Sources in the Economic Offence Wing of the Mumbai police said Gangavane exploited his position as the lone man carrying out all the payment-related operations of the department. While he processed payments after approval from seniors, he allegedly forged bills and encashed the money.
The department spends money to hold events and training camps. It also has several schemes and scholarships meant for the children of Naval officers. Sources said the 36-year-old clerk also inflated many bills.
After auditors raised questions, Navy initiated an inquiry, which uncovered fraudulent transactions involving over Rs 2 crore and that there were several beneficiaries who had not received their payment. Meanwhile, Gangavane stopped coming to work and could not be contacted.
The police registered a case following a complaint by Commandant Punam Dravid of the Navy. A senior officer from Colaba police station said, "As the amount can go over Rs 3 crore, we have transferred the case to the EOW."
Parag Manere, deputy commissioner of police (EOW), said they have asked the Navy to submit all the documents. "Our probe is on to verify how much amount exactly he has siphoned off."
