The state government had earlier decided to conduct admission in all engineering colleges across the state on the basis of JEE (main), the national level test, and Std XII scores with equal weightage to each.

The notification reiterates that 50% weightage shall be given to the percentile of marks obtained in JEE (main) 2014 – Paper 1 and 50% to the percentile of marks obtained in physics, chemistry and mathematics in the board exam.

"For Maharashtra candidates (type A, B, C, D, E) who have passed HSC from state board or CBSE and ICSE, the percentile shall be calculated separately for their respective boards on the basis of March 2014 exam. For them, result of March 2014 of the respective board shall be considered for the purpose of total number of students appeared for physics, chemistry and mathematics in the respective board," reads the notification.

However, if a candidate has passed Std XII from a board other than state board, CBSE or ICSE, s/he shall be assigned equivalent board percentile of Maharashtra state boards' candidate scoring equal marks in PCM for March 2014 exam, reads the notification.

The formula: The notification gives the following formula which DTE will use to calculate the JEE percentile, board percentile and then the composite score:

JEE percentile (Jo) = Number of students who scored marks less than the candidate [divided by] Total number of students who appeared for the JEE (main) 2014 Paper 1 [multiplied by] 100Board percentile (P) = Number of students who scored marks less than the candidate in the respective board exam 2014 [divided by] Total number of students who appeared for physics, chemistry and mathematics in the respective board exam held in March 2014 [multiplied by] 100Composite score = 0.5 x JEE Percentile (Po) + 0.5 x Board Percentile (P)Merit List shall be prepared on the basis of composite score. For example...Aspirant Rajeev Mane scored total 282 (94%) in physics, chemistry and maths in XYZ board and 50 marks in JEE (main) 2014-Paper 1.Number of candidates appeared in board exam in PCM group: 3,23,227Number of candidates who scored less than Rajeev (282): 3,22,969Number of candidates appeared in JEE (main) Paper 1: 12,78,580Number of candidates who scored less than Rajeev (50) in JEE (main) Paper 1: 8,21,007JEE percentile (Po) = 8,21,007/12,78,580 x 100 = 64.21240751Board percentile (P) = 3,22,969/3,23,227 x 100 = 99.92017994Composite score = 0.5 x Po + 0.5 x P= 0.5 x 64.21240751 + 0.5 x 99.92017994= 82.06629373For int'l and other states' board candidatesCandidates who pass Std XII from a board other than Maharashtra state board, CBSE or ICSE shall be assigned equivalent board percentile of Maharashtra state boards' candidate scoring equal number of marks in PCM for March 2014 exam, reads the notification. This implies that candidates who graduate from international boards like IB and those from the other state boards, including those who are from Maharashtra-Karnataka disputed border area, will be assigned equivalent percentile of Maharashtra state board candidate scoring equal marks in PCM.While DTE officials denied any discrimination and defended the move saying such candidates would be handful so seeking full data from their board would not be feasible, candidates are apprehensive.IB board candidates, who will get their result on July 5, will anyway not be able to apply as the DTE deadline to submit the form ends on July 3.
