Drug cell keeps an eye on entry rates, DJs

The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) is keeping a close watch on New Year parties organised across the city this year. One such hotel owner from Worli told DNA on the condition of anonymity that the cell is collecting information about the different parties being organised in various hotels in the city as well as the suburbs. It is also checking the antecedents of their organisers.

Though all hotels, big and small, have received a 14-point circular issued by the deputy commissioner of police (HQ), they are intrigued by some of the enquiries. “They are trying to find out what kind of a crowd is expected in a particular place and what the charges are for entry, food and drinks. In fact, they are also asking us about the DJs [disco jockeys] playing music the party on New Year’s eve,” said the owner.

However, a source from the ANC said: “It is commonly known that the DJs are often involved in supplying drugs. They are the ones who play the specific kind of music needed for trance parties, where drugs are usually consumed. As far as reviewing entry charges is concerned, if we notice that some small-time hotel is charging exorbitantly, it may be because the charge includes other incentives like drugs.”

A record of the rates at hotels will also help the ANC in deciding where to send its officials for a check. “Since we send our people in disguise, it is inevitable to buy tickets and enter the party. Considering that we have a limited budget, we cannot always buy our way in. This record helps us assess which places can be given paid visits,” said the source. It is also essential that the disguise looks authentic. As such, the ANC personnel are also expected to sport trendy by sporting stylish beards or studs in the ears.
