Doctors at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital have successfully performed a high-risk surgery on a 19-year-old boy to remove a cancerous chest tumour weighing 7.5kg.

The tumour had pushed Shubham Mishra’s heart to the extreme right, making it life-threatening.

“Giant mediastinal teratoma are rare tumours and mediastinal teratoma with malignant transformation are rarer. Anti-cancer drugs showed little improvement in this case. It was a high-risk surgery,” said Dr Rajesh Mistry, director of oncology at the Andheri hospital.

“The tumour had occupied the entire left side and half of the right side of his chest, pushing the heart and major blood vessels to the extreme right. The right side of his chest had expanded because of the tumour, pushing the diaphragm down,” he added.

Since his diagnosis in July 2011, Mishra was losing weight fast. The boy from Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh was barely able to walk and could not even lie down. And, when he did walk a few paces, he would get out of breath.

His parents got worried and brought him to Mumbai for treatment.

The doctors faced a tough challenge as Mishra was very weak — he had lost 10kg in five months. But, they successfully removed the tumour along with part of pericardium (covering of the heart). Mishra was kept on respirator for 48 hours in the ICU and discharged 15 days after the surgery.

Mishra is slowly gaining his strength. He can now lie comfortably and can walk without getting out of breath, said doctors.

“It is great that the doctors were able to remove such a big tumour. But, I am not sure if this is one of the largest chest tumours,” said Dr Anil Theroor, consulting oncologist at Fortis Hospital.
