Doctor hangs himself after prayers

A 56-year-old doctor allegedly hanged himself at his residence in Borivli (West) on Thursday night. He was being treated for psychiatric problem for the past seven years.
The police have not found any suicide note from his resident and have registered a case of accidental death.

The police said that Dr Atul Gandhi owns Gandhi Nursing Home in Borivli (West) and was staying with his wife Darshana on the third floor of Moti building.

“The doctor and his wife had gone to a relative’s place for Ganpati immersion on Thursday evening. Gandhi came home around 8.30pm while his wife stayed back. She came home around 9.30pm and rang the bell several times but did not get any response,” said Suresh Kilje, police inspector, MHB police station.

She called on his mobile phone but did not get response. "She had a spare key. When she opened the door, she was shocked seeing her husband hanging from the rope used to dry clothes," he added.

She informed her neighbours, relatives and the police. “The body was sent to Bhagwati Hospital for a post mortem. We have not found any suicide note in his house,” said Subhash Vede, police inspector.

The couple has a daughter, Ushma, who lives in Pune, and son Abhishek who lives in Ahmednagar.

“Gandhi’s wife said that he was being treated for a psychiatric problem for seven years. So it appears he might have committed suicide due to this. We do not suspect any foul play," he added.

“We have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the case,” said another officer.  When DNA went to Gandhi’s house, the family refused to talked and banged shut the door.
