Sarvankar’s health started deteriorating in Taloja prison on September 4. He was admitted to the civic hospital in Vashi that afternoon and was later shifted to JJ hospital in Byculla.
“He was put on ventilator. He was suffering from Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a peripheral nervous system disorder,” said Dr TP Lahane, dean, JJ hospital.
A neurologist at the hospital said, “A progressive neurological disorder, it sets in due to existing infection. The body’s own immune system attacks the nerves. It causes paralysis of the limbs and can attack respiratory muscles, which causes difficulty in breathing.”
Lahane said Sarvankar was given prompt treatment. “We administered five immunoglobulin injections costing Rs2,72,000. However, he didn’t respond to any medication and succumbed to GBS at 7.30am on Thursday,” said Lahane.
The preliminary cause of death has been stated as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome with GBS. However, his viscera has been preserved for histopathological analysis.
