The Lal Bahadur Shastri Road is a crucial pathway in the eastern suburbs, yet it is rife with potholes and uneven stretches. The road itself is narrow with regard to the heavy vehicular traffic it witnesses and there are encroachments, too.

"There are barricades installed at many locations, various spots are dug up for utility works. I doubt if the roads will be smooth enough for commute by the monsoons, but I hope enough effort is being put into filling up the trenches," activist Anil Galgali said.

Former MP of the area, Sanjay Dina Patil (NCP), said poor desilting of culverts in railway premises cause the water logging. "There is never co-ordination between the BMC and the railways, which results in flooding on railway tracks, as well as areas around the stations."

He believes two-wheeler owners will be the worst hit this monsoon considering the road projects undertaken this year plus the metro work that is to begin soon.

Ajay Shete, a resident of Vidyavihar, said, "Driving on LBS road in monsoons is a nightmare, especially when it rains heavily. Roads on the Kurla-Ghatkopar stretch are dug up for some work or the other through out the year. Either the road department or hydraulic engineers, or storm water drains department carry out work in the area. Yet, potholes are never evened out properly. While work is done to smoothen the path, in a rush to meet May 31 deadline, the quality of the work is compromised. The potholes reappear after two to three spells of heavy rains."

"Water logging at various spots on LBS Road adds to the traffic woes. The traffic to and from Thane, Sakinaka, Powai and the traffic towards the Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road and Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road gets badly affected," he added.

However, Ranjit Dhakane, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 6), said, "There are no major water logging spots in the area (Ghatkopar, Bhandup, Kanjurmarg). We will speed up desilting work by month end. Work is being done in collaboration with the Railways and the PWD and there won't be any major flooding this monsoon."
