The residents belong to Sector 1 of Dharavi, which unlike the other four sectors, mostly comprises buildings and chawls. Their grouse is that they are being treated at par with slum dwellers. Besides that, they also want a better transit accommodation.

Meanwhile, the DRP claims that the size of the homes for these people hasn't yet been frozen and they are trying to mostly find transit accommodation close to Dharavi and only if all options fail, will Mahul be considered.

Rajesh Sharma, a member of the DRP Sector 1 Vikas Samiti, said the residents are upset since they came to know that there is a possibility of them being shifted to transit a accommodation in Mahul and about the size of the homes they are to get. There are close to 150 buildings, and many chawls along with shops in Sector 1.

Sharma says, "We are being treated at par with slum dwellers. We are legal tenants staying in buildings, with ample space. One of our major demand is to shift our case from current regulations to that used for BDD chawls. We have bigger homes than that of the BDD chawl residents and yet, we are being given smaller homes."

However, refuting the claim, SVR Srinivas, the head of DRP, said, "We are aware that there are buildings and slums in Dharavi. We aren't treating them at par with slum dwellers. The home size for the people residing in these buildings will be bigger than what slum dwellers get. But the size is yet to be frozen."

"Our first attempt is to find transit accommodation for residents within the vicinity that is closer to Dharavi. Only in a very rare case will Mahul be considered," Srinivas said on the topic of the transit homes.
