Four social activists have been selected for this year’s ‘Dhananjay Thorat Ideal Activist Award’ for their contribution to society.

The nominees include progressive Muslim activist Sayyadbhai, folk artist Vasant Avasarikar, writer Ramesh Chavan and Bapusaheb Deshmukh, an activist from Amravati district.

The announcement was made by president of Dhananjay Thorat Trust (DTT) and city Congress MLC, Mohan Joshi, on Friday. The award has been instituted in the memory of Congress activist and former corporator Dhananjay Thorat.

“This is the fourth year that DTT is bestowing the awards. We are organising a function on September 18 at Mahatma Phule Museum auditorium on Ghole Road, Shivajinagar, to give away the awards,” Joshi said.

The awards would be given by deputy speaker of state legislative council, Vasant Davkhare, and senior journalist Arun Tikekar would chair the event.

The main award of Rs25,000 would be given to Sayyadbhai while Avasarikar, Chavan and Deshmukh would be awarded Rs11,000 each.
