After experiencing this season’s lowest temperature last week, it appears the city will have to wait for more than two to three days to witness a similar chill again.

At a time when most parts of the state are experiencing temperatures below 10 degrees centigrade, Mumbai’s maximum temperatures are showing a continuous rise.

On December 18, city’s maximum temperature was 32.6 degrees Celsius (°C) at Colaba weather station, compared to the 31°C and 30.9°C recorded on December 17 and 16 respectively. The minimum temperature recorded at Santa Cruz weather station on Saturday was 17°C.

Except for the Konkan region and the coastal areas, the rest of the state has seen winter’s arrival, with temperatures dropping below 15°C. At the popular hill station Mahabaleshwar, the temperature has dropped to 11°C.

“The cold wave from North has receded and until it strikes back, the temperature will not drop much in Mumbai,” said RV Sharma, deputy director general (western region), Indian Meteorological Department. He mentioned that the present temperature conditions in the city will remain static for the next two to three days.

In Maharashtra, Vidarbha is completely under winter’s grip, with temperatures dropping drastically across the region. The weather station at Wardha recorded 5°C on Saturday, the lowest temperature in the state.

“The interior parts of the state are experiencing winter to the fullest, and as per the observations, the present condition will continue without any major changes in temperature levels. The temperature condition will remain constant in Mumbai too for a couple of days,” said Sharma.

The city had experienced its chilliest winter in February 2008, when the mercury dropped to about 8.5°C.
