Just a day after police constable Vilas Shinde lost his battle for life after being attacked by motorists in Khar, another such incident took place in Kurla on Thursday afternoon. A non-cognisable complaint has been registered regarding the matter.
According to the police, traffic constable Devidas Nimbalkar was on duty at VB Nagar area. "Nimbalkar spotted a man riding a scooter without helmet. He signalled the rider to stop, but the latter accelerated in an attempt to escape and went on to hit Nimbalkar. The rider, identified as Ajaaz Khan (23), also did not have a license. He was caught by other policemen at the spot. Nimbalkar sustained injuries on his knee and waist. He was later discharged from the hospital," said senior police inspector of VB Nagar police station, Bharat Bhoite.
He added that Khan has been charged under section 186 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), for obstructing a public servant in discharge of his public function.
Khan was detained by the police till late in evening, until he paid the deposit for the relevant sections applied under the Motor Vehicles Act-1988. Commenting on the incident, police spokesperson deputy commissioner Ashok Dudhe said, "Action will be taken against the rider in accordance to the offence he has committed."
Then later in the evening, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered in Colaba against two men from Amravati for assaulting a traffic cop.
"Constable Rajendra Pawar was on duty in Colaba, when he stopped a car with tinted glass. The two men in the car – Amravati residents Rajendra Lohiya and Ahmed Khan – got into a verbal spat with Pawar and pushed him. A complaint was lodged under section 353 of IPC for assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty," said deputy commissioner of police, Colaba division, Manoj Sharma.
At the same time, to commemorate Vilas Shinde's martyrdom, a bandh was observed in Worli area. When dna the senior police inspector, Vinay Kulkarni of Worli police, he said, "We had deployed our policemen in that area for a bandhobast. We don't want to comment more on the issue."
