Demolition notice has been served on Musafirkhana

MUMBAI: Underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s last known address in Mumbai may soon bite the dust. Musafirkhana, a decrepit ground plus two-storey building on plot number 33 at Pakmodia Street, has been served a demolition notice by the BMC due to its dilapidated state.

However, the entire second floor, which was occupied by Dawood till he fled India in 1986, and later by his mother Aminabai, has been attached by the Tada court as Dawood is an absconding accused in the 1993 serial blasts case.

On Thursday, an application filed by Shoeb Noorani, who claims the building is owned by the Haji Ismail Haji Habib Musafirkhana Trust, came up for hearing before the Tada court. The plea has sought the court’s nod to demolish the  building. Noorani has also sought police protection for the demolition, saying the building is under Dawood’s protection.

Noorani has sought protection for the demolition, saying the building is “under the protective umbrella of the Dawood syndicate.”

However, locating Dawood’s building is not that easy. Buildings on Pakmodia Street are not numbered evenly. Request for directions drew a blank.

An old woman guided us to a rickety wooden staircase and, as we climbed up, the sealed quarters of Dawood became visible. The rooms with grilled windows were clearly incongruous with the rest of the building.

Noorani, 46, claims the building was constructed by his great-grandfather and the 200 occupants have illegally occupied it. His suit, claiming ownership of the building, is pending in the Bombay HC. He collects a monthly royalty of Rs 24,000 from the few occupants who bother to pay him. “I am fed up and just want to raze the entire structure,” he said.

The CBI claims the trust is only a de jure owner of the property in which Dawood built the unauthorised floor. The court has asked CBI to produce records of the building and the matter has been adjourned for a week.
