MUMBAI
While the city received heavy rainfall on Monday, the civic body is gearing up for disaster-related activities on Tuesday when a 4.97mt high tide is expected at 1.49 pm, the highest of the season. The Met officials have predicted heavy rainfall for the next 48 hours.
The Colaba and Santa Cruz weather stations recorded 38.8 mm and 61.4 mm rainfall respectively between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday. According to the Met officials, the rainfall between 35.6 mm and 64.4 mm is considered as rather heavy. A few cases of water-logging were reported in parts of the city and suburbs on Monday afternoon.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that heavy rainfall is expected in the next 2-3 days. “There is a low pressure area formed over north-west Bay of Bengal off Odisha and the adjoining West Bengal coast. It is moving north-west wards, which will increase the rainfall activity over Maharashtra in the next 2-3 days,” said Ajay Kumar, director, IMD.
Kumar added that heavy rainfall warning for North Konkan — under which Mumbai falls — and Goa will be issued for the next 48 hours.
The civic officials said that it had a tough time for the past two weeks in dealing with water-logging issues in the city. “So, we have given instructions to all the officials concerned for disaster-related activities to avoid water-logging and other issues. We hope that heavy rainfall will not coincide with the high tide timings in the week,” said a senior civic official.
The official added that the civic body has deployed more personnel on its six beaches to ensure safety of citizens.
“We have deployed a team of NDRF personnel, civil defence and fire brigade on all the six beaches from Sunday. Each team consists of 5 members. We have also asked the police to increase patrolling on the beaches,” he said.
