The Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane, while grand, were just as noisy this year. As per the noise-level readings taken by Thane activist Dr Mahesh Bedekar, the decibel levels at six Dahi Handi locations in the city were in the range of 80 to 90 decibels. Disco jockeys, loudspeakers, live performances contributed to the noise pollution in the city.

The normal noise level in residential areas is 65 decibels during the day and 55 decibels at night. But the noise levels at the six Dahi Handi spots crossed these numbers. At the Sanskruti Yuva Pratishthan's Dahi Handi of MLA Pratap Sarnaik, the noise level was recorded at 85-90 decibels, in Vartaknagar.

In fact, near Chitnis Hospital, which is a silent zone, noise level recorded was at 80-85 decibel. As per government rules, noise levels in silent zones cannot exceed 50 decibels in the day and 40 decibels at night.

Moreover, even at Sanskruti Pratishthan's Dahi Handi at Hiranandani Meadows, which was visited by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the decibel level was between 80 to 88. All the readings were recorded between 2.30 pm to 4.20 pm.
