The AIU officials said that the woman, Soni Lachumal, was intercepted after she arrived on a Thai Airways flight from Bangkok.

“Four pieces of gold, concealed in her rectum, were recovered. The bars weighed 387 grams,” said Kiran Kumar, deputy commissioner (AIU).

The official said that in a case some months back, an accused died after a capsule containing drugs burst inside his body.

The official said that they have come across many cases where passengers have been found to smuggle in gold and other contraband by concealing it in the rectum.

On Friday, a Thai couple were held with around Rs16 lakh worth of gold chains and a kada. The two, Meekrout Montree and Kositsmith Supawadee, arrived from Bangkok.

Gold smuggling at the city airport has risen by about 458 per cent during the current financial year, in comparison to the last year.
