The arrest was made on Sunday, and the accused identified as Mukaddar Mumtazali Idrsi is believed to have injure a 58 year-old women while he was trying to flee with the victim's handbag.

According to the CSMT police officials, the victim identified as Pratibha Tripathi who is also the complainant is a resident of Amboli area of Andheri west and had boarded a passenger train to meet her sister in Banglore. Idrsi who is a history-sheeter and also a professional mobile thief was waiting for the right moment to grab Tripathi's handbag and jump out of the moving train. After the train departed from CSMT station, Idrsi after 15 minutes tried to snatch the bag but Tripathi was not letting him go and later Idrsi dragged her towards the door which was situated nearby to Tripathi's seat and later both of them feel out of the moving train.

"The accused frequently used the element of surprise to loot other victims of his theft and as a common modus for his previously committed offenses, he used to jump out of the moving train when it has not caught up speed. In case of Tripathi, the accused used the similar tactic where he tried to get away with the bag but the scuffle ended with Tripathi getting injured. Tripathi boarded the Udyan express train of coach number S3 and seat number 8 which departed from CSMT station at 8.10 am and when the train reached Sandhurst Road station at 8.15 am, the accused swiftly approached towards Tripathi who has just kept her mobile inside her bag after speaking to her sister informing her that she had left from Mumbai. Since the train has just departed the speed was low and also the passengers inside the coach were less. On sensing perfect opportunity to flee away with the bag, Idris tried to jump out but eventually got in a scuffle with Tripathi who was not ready to let go of her bag. After they fell out on tracks, Idris managed to absond but Tripathi sustained critical injuries on her head and got a fracture on her left hand. She later spotted a down train heading to Karjat and managed to get help from motorman of the train. She was taken to Byculla station after which after receiving medical aide, she was admitted to JJ hospital and her condition is stable as of now." said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Purushottam Karad.

After Tripathi lodged a complaint against Idris, the police team launched a lookout for him and on Sunday, as per the tip of the informers, the police team picked him up near JJ hospital gate number six. On being interrogated in custody, Idris confessed to the crime and also admitted two other offenses related to mobile theft which were not reported.

"Idris is a native of Uttar Pradesh and came to Mumbai in 2004. He was involved in theft of big small materials and he also tried to sell Tripathi's phone but he could not. Since the gravity of the offense is not small, he was quickly apprehended by the police team and has been sent to police custody till Wednesday. We have registered a case under section 307 (Attempt to murder), 397 (Robbery) and 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in robbery) of the Indian Penal Code and also other significant section of Indian Railways Act. We have seized the bag and also the mobile phone of Tripathi and other necessary investigation is going on." Karad added.
