Now, you need not worry if your laptop is stolen. Just visit an electronics goods shop in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, and you could find your laptop there. Crime branch sleuths of the Mumbai railway police have busted a laptop robbery racket, which involves the robbers selling the stolen laptops at Ratlam.
The crime branch arrested Asif Ahmed Qureshi, 30, an electronics goods shop owner from Ratlam, who spilled the beans on the inter-state racket. “Qureshi has been booked under section 379 (theft) of the IPC and a railway parcel containing seven stolen laptops was recovered from him,” said Kishore Pasalkar, police inspector, Mumbai railway police crime branch.
Pasalkar added that the seven laptops recovered from Qureshi, who has been remanded to police custody till June 25 by the CST railway court, were all high-end ones - 3 Dell, 2 HP and 1 each of Lenovo and Acer.
The racket was unearthed by Pasalkar on June 19 after he received information about the parcel containing stolen laptops being loaded on to the Indore bound Avantika Express.
“We tried to intercept the train at Borivli station, but missed it. So, a
special team was sent to Ratlam by the Golden Temple Express. In the meantime, I spoke to sub-inspector Dinesh Soni of the Ratlam railway police and asked him to seize the suspected parcel at Ratlam station,” said Pasalkar, adding that they are yet to nab the mastermind behind the racket.
When the train reached Ratlam on the morning of June 20, the Ratlam railway police seized the parcel and it was handed over to the team sent from Mumbai. The same day, a porter - Nasir Sheikh - came to the parcel office at Ratlam with a railway receipt (RR) to collect the consignment. The parcel office staff informed the railway police, who in turn nabbed Sheikh. During interrogation, Sheikh named Qureshi as the owner of the consignment, following which Qureshi was summoned for questioning.
“He gave evasive answers and could not produce purchase bills for the laptops in the parcel. But, after a while, he admitted that the parcel contained stolen laptops,” said Pasalkar.
