On Wednesday, late Bollywood actress Sridevi was laid to rest at Pawan Hans crematorium in Vile Parle.
Sridevi's body was brought in the truck with her face covered in make-up, a large south Indian style vermillion and was decorated in heavy jewellery and maroon coloured Kanjeevaram saree. The last rites were conducted with south Indian rituals. "When a woman dies as married, it is a ritual to give her the appearance of a 'devi' (goddess) in deep sleep," said Pandit Vijay Acharya.
Pandit Acharya was part of the final rites and was among the other priests who had chanted mantras for her soul to rest in peace. "South Indian and vedic rituals are almost same. We conducted the final rites and the pyre was lit by Boney Kapoor," said Acharya.
The friends and family members from the film industry and from Green Acres in Lokhandwala at Andheri were part of the last rites.
